No x [SOLVED]

I upgraded:
curl libdrm libinput wayland mesa wayland-protocols xf86-video-fbdev xf86-video-nouveau xf86-video-vesa
xorg-server   xorg-server-(common/devel/xdmx/xephyr/xnest/xvfb/xwayland)
Now x won't start, rootless or root. I have got as far as checking for more upgrades, but there are none, so this is on the latest versions for now. I still have the cached old packages so it's no big deal, but I thought it worth a mention.  :D

I think it's the bit at the end where it segfaults causing the issue, but here is the whole log:

Hmm that is interesting. I can actually reproduce that exact same issue with a simple "startx" in tty. I'm running nouveau right now myself and it segfaults in exactly the same place for me. Thankfully, I normally use Wayland which apparently works without any problems, so I didn't notice xorg breaking (Xwayland works fine here). I noticed  that there is quite a large change in the PKGBUILDs between xorg-server versions so I would bet something in that configuration somehow breaks nouveau.

I assume this is nouveau and xorg specific since no one else has complained about any other driver setup.

Ah, there's a thread on Arch Forums with the exact same issue. Nouveau seems to be the only driver with that exact segfault, but some people noted issues on different drivers. Regardless, it's definitely something upstream.

Not quite true as I'm now running nouveau and xorg or wayland, on both Artix and Arch linux  with no problems after problems with Nvidia doing the exact same thing

Everything is working normally with  those xorg-server and xf86-video packages downgraded and no other changes, I have rebooted a few times now and it is booting and shutting down with no problems. Thank you for the extra information.

This was from everything.log, while it was starting x then failing, and the autologin was restarting on tty7:

I know it's not quite the same problem, but with nvidia-340xx-dkms (currently 340-106), I get no X and the error about unsupported ABI (sorry, already gone from the log).  Downgrading to xorg-server-1.19.6 puts me back in business.  In this case, it seems to be a known nvidia issue.  It seems multiple drivers are just not yet ready for xorg-server 1.20.

That was a good reason for me to finally move away from nvidia-340xx to nouveau in my laptop. For hardware that old it makes no difference in performance either. Now I've got a beautiful and fast KMS framebuffer too!

So nvidia has now released 340.107.   Since the package is from extra, I assume I just have to wait for Archlinux to package it.

I have updated to the currently available  versions of the packages which I had previously set as ignorepkgs. They may have been fine for a while now, so this could be old news to some, but everything is working again. The problem has been resolved, it's all good.
