Suspend not working with kernel > 6.6.16 on laptop ASUS ROG Strix G173PI-LL044

Hi all.

JFYI. Suspend-to-RAM not working on kernels linux-lts-6.6.18-1-lts, 6.6.20-1-lts. It freezes for about a minute, then reboots.

Works on 6.6.16-1-lts.

Also tried downgrading nvidia, stopping all possible services -- but only downgrading kernel solved the issue.

Hello dimgel,

Could you please tell us more information about your problem?  1 Are there logs associated with the crash?  2 When it crashes, can you reach a tty session or does it reboot without any visual display?  3 What are you using for your graphics drivers?  4 Did you run any recent updates before this happened?  5 Are you running any third party software NOT from the artix repos?  6-Do you have enabled any non-artix repos?  7 Are you able to hibernate the computer?

It looks like there was a BIOS update for your computer released on 3/6/2024 . . . 8 have you installed this and reconfigured your BIOS since?

9 Finally, could you please post your disk layout?  I am wondering if you have a SWAP partiton/file and if it has sufficient space to accommodate suspend to RAM.

Looking forward to hearing back.  I have prepended numbers to the questions so that you may address them more conveniently.

Cheers

Could you please tell us more information about your problem?

1. Nothing in /var/log/dmesg/* (I use s6). My suspend script stops iwd before calling `loginctl suspend` (there were problems with it in the past), and detaching wlan0 is the last line in recorded dmesg.

2. When `loginctl suspend` is called, screen turns off as it should, but nothing more happens, keyboard is non-responsive. After a while it reboots.

3. xf86-video-amdgpu for usual work, nvidia blob (4 packages: dkms, settings, utils, lib32 utils) for games. Didn't run any games while trying to solve the issue, though.

4. Yes, system is completely up to date, now except kernel.

5, 6. I have wifi dongle driver rtl8812au-dkms-git from AUR (currently dongle is not used, but I prefer to keep driver). Nothing else was resident when I tried to solve the issue. AFAIR I've got few things from "extra" repo, but they weren't running (e.g. I have extra/nvidia-prime which provides prime-run script, but as I already said, I didn't run games now).

7,9 Currently I have no swap file/partition and didn't try to hibernate. It was 10-15 years since I hibernated anything.

8. My current BIOS is G713PIAS327 (2023-09-13). Maybe I should update it if problem persists in future kernel versions.

9. No swap file/partition. VFAT UEFI + encrypted ext4 root-and-all under mdadm raid 1. Used this setup longer than I can remember (maybe same 10-15 years, initially on Gentoo). 32GB RAM, 83% free (well, at the moment I do run game & lots of other stuff) -- is pretty enough for anything (and I don't understand how suspend-to-RAM could occupy more RAM than already in use; don't tell me it copies all allocated RAM contents to another RAM).

Thank you for all of the information.  can you successfully navigate through runlevels using s6? (see here)

3.  Why do you have two graphics drivers installed?  Which is actually loaded when you check with modprobe?  There may be useful information in the logs for the driver that is not running

and except your system BIOS

If you do not have sufficient memory, and no swap configured, the system will not suspend correctly.

I recommend doing it now

9. No swap file/partition

Create a swap partition and activate it, make sure it is in use, and try to reproduce the issues.

Note that Artix Linux is a rolling release distribution.  If you are using bleeding edge proprietary drivers, you may find system stability is more complicated with rolling release distributions.  There's an article on the differences here.

just noticed this.  could you paste the suspend script?  Is it possible something requires iwd when you resume, but it is not coming up again because it was stopped this way?

I am sorry we could not be more helpful.  I think you will find the questions will help you sleuth out your suspend issues.

Best of luck, please  consider being kinder in your posts.  We are a community and there is not room for negativity or rudeness.  I hope you find the distro you are looking for.
