Don't buy Kindles. There are better options (Kobo for one)
Don't buy ebooks with drm.

I do have a Kindle. It was an Xmas gift. I never used to be able to allow it to connect to wifi or it would silently upgrade the firmware and I'd lose the jailbreak I did. Apparently now it's so old that there will be no new updates but I don't trust that so it's never online.
With the Jailbreak I can have Koreader installed which can open regular .epubs.

I also have a Kobo. It's far easier to install Koreader on it and while auto firmware updates can break Koreader It's simple to reinstall it.

If you do have a kindle and lots of azw books you used to be able to convert to epub with Calibre and a couple a plugins. You probably still can but I haven't tried in many years so not 100% sure?
