[SOLVED] Firefox isn't able to play certain videos since yesterdays update 06 October 2025, 17:04:59 Yesterday, october 5th, firefox and a bunch of video codecs got updated, and now the browser no longer plays videos or streams from twitch.tv. I tried Brave and it worked there, so might just be a firefox issue. Anything I can do about that?Edit: Checked on my laptop that's running cachyos, works there even after the same browser+codec update.[TL;DR mod edit: install ffmpeg4.4] Quote Selected Last Edit: Today at 17:42:46 by nous
Re: FIrefox isn't able to play certain videos since yesterdays update Reply #1 – 06 October 2025, 19:47:00 The same thing occurs to me too on Gecko browsers (Firefox, Librewolf).Videos on Facebook or X are playing without sound and the mini progress bar is not functional. The Chromium browsers are functioning properly. Re: FIrefox isn't able to play certain videos since yesterdays update Reply #3 – 06 October 2025, 21:09:30 I updated firefox from 143.0.3-1 to 143.0.4-1 and did not see any sound problem on youtube.I updated all the software and still have sound; I use openbox as wm and my sound is pure alsa (I don't use pulseaudio or pipewire), Quote Selected

Re: FIrefox isn't able to play certain videos since yesterdays update Reply #5 – 06 October 2025, 21:59:27 Same here. I have a suspicion it is related to DRM content. In my browser Firefox (but I also tried in chromium) no audio or video would play from Netflix, Spotify, Qobuz or my local TV provider.YT videos are fine though. Re: FIrefox isn't able to play certain videos since yesterdays update Reply #7 – 06 October 2025, 22:53:28 I noticed that it has been a couple days since FFmpeg was bumped from v7 to 8. That might have had some effect on Mpeg videos.Maybe Firefox and company didn't follow suit for some reason. Quote Selected

Issue is somewhere else.I recently discovered that the VLC player is having trouble playing certain MP4 videos.Codec not supported: VLC could not decode the format "h264" (H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10)) Quote Selected
Re: Firefox isn't able to play certain videos since yesterdays update Reply #12 – 07 October 2025, 15:48:07 Twitch TV works for me in Firefox, although many videos are blocked here with an age restriction due to recent UK oppression and censorship. Also Facebook videos work, you don't need an account if you use a search engine to get direct links for testing, e.g.:https://www.facebook.com/reel/1171824748131161The audio was off by default, click one of the buttons on the top right of the video image to enable it.I am using alsa, no pulse, and for VLC I have vlc-plugins-all installed which is required in many cases after the plugins were split out into separate packages. Re: Firefox isn't able to play certain videos since yesterdays update Reply #13 – 07 October 2025, 16:31:26 That facebook video works for me in latest firefox 143.0.4-1 and as for vlc I have all the plugins (via vlc-plugins-all). So far I have not discovered any sound issues; perhaps others can point to problematic cases. Quote Selected
