LightDM GTK+ Greeter settings don't stick

Title says it all.  This is the Artix XFCE version just installed two days ago. It's an amazing distro!  Fast and runs cool on my HP laptop with nVidia/intel etc.

BUT, some settings don't stick in configuration.  I'm able to fix most of it, but I need some pointers on which files to edit or which commands to invoke in order to get the greeter screen to my liking.  I have a background and personal pic selected in the greeter utility, but they don't appear in the login screen.

Any ideas?

Hello and thanks for the suggestion and link.  I came here for specific Artix advice, as I prefer to stay away from systemd distros.  I am aware of the overlap and of course the Arch relationship with Artix (obviously), but many of the code commands (systemctl for example) are not usable lin Artix.

So, perhaps I'll get some advice from an Artix user who has seen the greeter not link to set backgrounds and pics.

Thanks again,

- Huck

Sorry, but what you wrote is pretty nonsense.
Archlinux's wiki is still essentially, you should not ignore it! We create only archlinux without systemd. systemd have nothing to do with missing picture in lightdm...

Well, thank you for displaying the low character of some users here in the Artix forums.  I would disagree with a person's views of things, but I'd not do the "nonsense" thing on a person's perspective.

Popped the bubble on positivity about this distro.  But we're so fortunate to have so many distros and BSDs.

Meanwhile, I've found that wkis are useful if you want to go there.. I want to go to the distro forums, for the simple reason that when I do a search on something distro related I most often land in such a forum.  You're reminding me of the strange sayings of some in such forms when a question is brought up:   "Google is your friend."  Well.. I googled and landed here, not in a wiki.  If you can't help, just say you don't know the answer to a a query and thus can't help.

I know about the wikis but (again) prefer the human contact of a user forum.  Going by your attitude there would just be a big link to the Arch wiki on the community page and this forum would not be needed.

Hello,

I also preffer to ask things on forum or chat because it is faster to ask someone who knows instead of searching for it on my own (many times the answer is something I was not looking at, or something I disregarded, or just missed).

In one way you say distro related and on the other you ask for program specific thing which is not fully Artix related but more general Archlinux question. In such case it is logical to direct you to Archwiki.

Archwiki as of now is still very usable, just dont get angry when you see systemd things and adapt the solution for your init or system (Artix in this case).

So your question is: Where can I find the configuration files of LightDM gtk greeter ?
Lets check wiki, it mentions "/etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf"
Lets check files provided by package "lightdm-gtk-greeter" with pacman
Code: [Select]
$ pacman -Fl lightdm-gtk-greeter
lightdm-gtk-greeter etc/
lightdm-gtk-greeter etc/lightdm/
lightdm-gtk-greeter etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf
lightdm-gtk-greeter usr/
lightdm-gtk-greeter usr/bin/
lightdm-gtk-greeter usr/bin/lightdm-gtk-greeter
lightdm-gtk-greeter usr/share/
lightdm-gtk-greeter usr/share/doc/
lightdm-gtk-greeter usr/share/doc/lightdm-gtk-greeter/
lightdm-gtk-greeter usr/share/doc/lightdm-gtk-greeter/sample-lightdm-gtk-greeter.css
... icons and locale ...
lightdm-gtk-greeter usr/share/xgreeters/
lightdm-gtk-greeter usr/share/xgreeters/lightdm-gtk-greeter.desktop
So according to files provided by the package it is "/etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf" which matches the wiki.

As a bonus you are saying you used some GUI to do it and you also did not provide the configuration files nor any logs.

This is a type of program which I configure once (but I use different one) and I expect for it work for years and decades without any changes. So even if I met similar issue I would at best direct you to some link or shared my conf, or tried to see if you have some errors in your config (which you did not provide).

So how did Artix failed in providing you the support to such a vague question? The given answer was "try to self study since the question is so vague."
And I will give you another answer: "We do not have enough data to help you any more than we already did. Can you provide the config files for lightdm and the logs?"

Ah... thank you!!   Now... very nice of you to provide that!   I'll get going on it now.

EDIT:  Well, I got going on it.. and find that after 22 years of installing and enjoying (most) linux distros and their community help sites, this Artix one is down at the bottom when it comes to respect for its users.  PCLinuxOS comes close, of course.  .. But, I'm going to keep Artix because I think it is about the developers and not about the snooty, holier than though forum admins.   The developers have uncorked a very nice little distro and it's mine.  Also, I'll be in and out searching for info on various issues, but mark it:  I'll never post a query in here again.  That's two people in here now I've encountered who are not welcome in my linux life.

How can anyone help you when you only shared your opinion and not actual config files in question?
Just how?

This reminded me of the Debian forums, where more often than not the concept was (and apparently still is)  "help people find their own solution." Searching now for recent lightdm related queries I find the most recent has no answers at all, after 2 days. Then in another the users solves it themselves, the advice from Head On A Stick (who helped me out in the past, btw) is "Persuade NVIDIA to start co-operating with Linux. Or throw that POS card away and buy something decent instead (ie, anything not made by NVIDIA)"
Here at least you usually get an answer, and often even the right one too if you can describe the problem patiently so people can understand. ;D
Rather than never say anything again why not put those 22 years experience to some use and chime in once in a while if you have the answer? There are so many permutations of software and config often you are the only one experiencing the issue. Many people can solve things given a pointer in the general direction, then no-one else has to research it to give step by step instructions, and can perhaps do something  else useful that will help you in the long run.
This is unlikely to ever become quite like the MS community though :

Hi Huck,

You can easily set that by lightdm-gtk-greeter settings as below:

To add on to linuxer's answer, make sure the wallpaper file is not in your home directory.

Root needs to have access to it. I keep mine in /usr/share/backgrounds.

Hello and welcome,
I installed Artix XFCE OpenRC on different PCs and each time I had problems with the appearance.
I settled them all in a very unscientific but effective way:
https://forum.artixlinux.org/index.php/topic,1638.msg11192.html#msg11192

It may have nothing to do with your problem, but it doesn't cost a thing to try and you don't risk anything.
