So i did a web search and i found the hp page for drivers for my system.  i downloaded 14 different driver sources from hp for anything that it might could be then installed p7zip and extracted all the .exe files to folders and copied those folders over to the install media in a separate folder and reran the install and tried searching every driver for the potentially correct one.  None of them worked.  I'm puzzled as to what could be the media driver i might need.  Even more so since i grabbed everything from the hp website.  I wanted to install windows 10 on my system for nostalgia and in case i might ever need it.  I have mainly used it in the past for pairing my logitech usb keyboard and mouse to the unified controller for example.  On occasion there might be other uses.

FYI.  I have had this problem for some time and before i installed my nvme drive.  Previously i was able to install windows onto this machine but for whatever reason it no longer boots.  I have ran sudo update-grub to try and pickup the windows install but grub is not seeing it.  gparted says the uefi boot drive for windows can not be read.  I also can't seem to repair it.

I am feeling stumped at this point.

Created a virtualbox, installed windows 10 pro in it and used thatbto create a windows 10 usb as the linux options werent working out.  Even so windows does not give me the option to install the version of windows i wish. Namely 10 pro.  It bypasses all the choices and restricts me to windows 10 home.

Try ventoy to make bootable usb

i did.  several times.  after creating it with gpt and installing ventoy i copied the iso over to the ventoy usb and after rebooting ventoy report no bootable iso was available, press enter to reboot.  rebooted into artix showed the iso in the ventoy usb.  used the same iso to create a 50gb virtualbox and install windows.  blech.  hate windows but there are uses for it when it is working.  When i was gaming i used the physical insta;l inside a virtualbox with shared folders to run esoui something or other and installed my eso addons inside the shared folder so that i could game on linux with addons.  I don't do that anymore.  it still has it's uses though.  quirky things come up from time to time.

I'm guessing i have bad usbs since they didn't show the iso in ventoy on reboot?  seems legit.  they are very old usbs 2.0some older than 8 yrs.  i think i got my moneys worth out of them? yah.  and some bad iso downloads too probably.  woeusb got all the way to the end to installing grub and never finished several times.

Downside to this business machine is i'm stuck with windows version tied to it home/core.  no pro.  no way no how.  unless i pay for a key.   maybe not even then.

so can i just delete

Code: [Select]
/boot/efi/EFI/Microsoft

off of my nvme drive since i now have windows sorted out completely on it's own drive and installed exclusively to that with no other drives installed on the system during that install...oi...the headaches.

yah?

cut and pasted it in a hidden folder with a new name someplace grub couldnt peek.  that was the easieast part of this.  I was so HAPPY!  when after installing windows to a drive all by itself that the bios recognized that windows bootloader and i was able to see my artix efi bootloader and didn't have to reinstall artix.  sighs of relief!

PS.  yes i know no one would give me support for this BUT for the nOObie or so who is dual booting that wrecks their system, this might prove useful.  It can just sit here quietly until someone quietly needs it.

just for fyi, my fstab mounting scheme includes mounting a drive in a directory of another drive and mounting an additional drive in the directory of that 2nd drive and mounting windows 10 so i can have access to it if i want to send a file from linux to windows - hibernation off and not an available option any longer..

one last thought.  Windows 10 install usb wouldn't give me the option to  install windows 10 pro on this machine.  It literally bypassed the option during setup.  What i did was this:  I installed windows 10 into a virtualbox while using a bare metal drive for the install.  there's a virtualbox internal commands thingy that will install a small .vdk file on your linux (mac or windows) host that will use your hdd/ssd to install on.  After installing it on bare metal drive i entered my key for windows 10 pro and activated windows 10 pro.  Rebooting out of linux i wa then able to use the f9 key to choose which os to boot from and windows 10 pro booted and is working great.

Code: [Select]
VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename "</path/to/file>.vmdk" -rawdisk /dev/sda

PS.  I'm on windows 10 pro now and writing to you from Montreal Canada as far as you can tell... or maybe i'm in sydney, australia...  who can say
