System halts randomly, audio playing and cursor moving for a while then crashes

Hello.

In multiple situations (browsing files in thunar, listening music in Audacious, audio work in Ardour, watching YT videos in LibreWolf, etc.) the picture freezes, although the audio remains playing and the cursor is responsive. I can't turn numlock or capslock on/off and I can't switch to another tty. After some 20 seconds both audio and cursor movement get choppy until everything freezes. Then I have to restart the PC manually.

My system is an Ryzen 5 processor with Radeon Vega 12 graphics.
I'm using Artix with xorg and pipewire, dwm as the window manager. After the initial install a few months ago, the system ran with no issues. I think this started happening after an update but I don't know when exactly.
For the last few weeks I've been running the system mostly to play GZDoom and it never crashed in-game so I noticed the crashing fairly recently.

Originally I've installed linux-rt with it's headers but recently I've tried linux-rt-lts, linux-lts and I'm currently on the latest Linux 6.12.7, all having the same issues.

I've used the bios (HP) memory check and it completed with no errors.

My system is an Ryzen 5 processor with Radeon Vega 11 graphics.
I had the exact same issue, is your box an Elitedesk 705 G4 Tiny? It's almost certainly not the kernel (I tried several versions). I downgraded the entire system to a known working date (my last full system update was in September) and freezes were gone. Then upgraded everything except amd-ucode, xf86-video-amdgpu, linux-firmware and mesa, still no freezes. Can't afford the time and lack the patience to test which one exactly is responsible, it would be nice if you could and reported back.

It is indeed the HP.

Anyway, I've had similar things happening to me when I freshly installed the Artix system exactly 1 year ago and it stopped doing that after I added `sysrq_always_enabled=1` as a kernel parameter setting, but im not sure if that's the case. Also, please try to temporarly remove amd-ucode just for test, refresh your mkinitcpio (sudo mkinitcpio -Pv) and then reboot and test if stuff like this happens again...

These symptoms can indicate some component is overheating, so also keep an eye on the CPU and GPU temps.

Thank you for all the replies.

Before downgrading the packages, I will first try what Shoun2137 suggested.
So, I never even installed the amd-ucode package, I've refreshed the mkinitcpio and added the 'sysrq_always_enabled=1' parameter and rebooted.

As far as I can tell, overheating isn't an issue but I'll add some widgets to my wm bar just to keep an eye on them a bit more closely.

Will report back.

It looks like the culprit was the mesa-1:24.3.2-1 driver.

I've updated the system to the latest packages and downgraded the mesa driver to 1:24.2.2-1. No crashes since.

This is what I've found after some duckduckgoing:
Quote from: xisonc on Reddit

Final update from me, and I'm only updating in the event someone else finds this useful.

Turns out it was a few different issues all at play for me:

bug in mesa 24.3.1 that affected amdgpu, specifically APUs (I have an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U), this was resolved by downgrading to 24.2.x. See: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/12253

there appears to be another bug in amdgpu related to thermal throttling in APUs, to which I was not able to find a fix and this bug has been open for ~9 months at time of writing: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/3251

Ultimately my solution was to swap laptops with my wife (from an AMD Ryzen 7 5700U to an Intel i5-1135G7). Still running some more stress and RAM tests on the AMD laptop to ensure it's stable even under Windows for my wife.

Gitlab issue: mesa 24.3.1 gallium crash/segfault on GPUs without format modifiers

Gitlab issue: Systemfreeze from mesa version 1:24.3.0-1-x86_64 and above with Chromium and derivatives

Thanks again, hopefully they'll fix this this.

It'll probably get fixed once mesa-24.3.x rolls out to more distros and the reports start stacking.

Currently dealing with this issue (or symptoms atleast). Not sure if it stems from the same problem. (I'm thinking since it's the same symptoms the probability of the cause of the problem you and I have might be the same.)

My post in reference to the problem I've mentioned: https://forum.artixlinux.org/index.php/topic,7551.msg45299.html

I've tried everything I can think of used standard, zen, and lts kernels. Used mesa-git and compiled older version as well. (by modifiying the pkgver in PKGBUILD of the mesa-git (though I only changed the version, not the libraries (one that is required to compile it) as well). changed compositors, dwl, sway, and dwm.))

I notice that it crashes more frequently if I used programs that use xorg/xwayland.

There are a few things I would like to ask and if possible ask you to reproduce the freeze. (I found how to do it with mine. I just want to confirm if this bug reproduction will work with you as well)

1. Are you using a window manager?

2. Do you have the packages steam, krita, and mesa-utils?

3. Can you please reproduce the freeze for me? (launch krita and open any image, steam, and glxgears. Then hold the switch focus key binding for the window manager until it freezes the pc). (demo: https://imgur.com/a/2rnuVTF)

4. Optional for the test: install wtype to simulate keyboard press and just loop the focus switching. (I can throw in the script if you want).

Notes.
1. I don't think mine is an overheating issue as well, tried GPU benchmarks, virtual machines and other intensive tasks. It finished it without freezes.

clappingsnowdrop:
I've installed mesa-utils, steam and krita and couldn't reproduce the crash with the older mesa 24.2.2

However, a new mesa 24.3.3 came out, so far I couldn't reproduce your crash using it as well.
I'm going to test it for a while and let you know if the crashes persist.

EDIT: It still crashes, reverted both mesa and lib32-mesa to 24.2.7 (the latest 24.2.x).

Please, keep us updated, I'm still keeping mesa pinned.

Thanks for the heads-up.

At this point I'll probably end up trying to manually compile the kernel. Although it's been a long time since I've done so. So I probably won't be able to do it for quite some time. (Years ago when I think I had to prove to myself I could install Gentoo when I just started my Linux journey.)

Update:

So, a new problem, x wouldn't start and posted an error in tty. I've checked the log and found that the new version of either llvm or llvm-libs (19.1.6 in both cases) causes it.

So, in addition to downgrading mesa to 24.2.7, now I also have to downgrade llvm and llvm-libs to 18.1.8-5.

There were no mesa drivers updates since my last post so no news there.
